The Nutrition Pyramid Healthy Eating the Easy Way

The nutrition pyramid is an easy to remember way to ensure that your eating is both healthy and nutritionally sound. The pyramid is formulated so that the less healthy foods are at the top, such as saturated fats etc and so are in smaller amounts, with the more healthy foods such as fruit, vegetables and wholegrain, lower down and so in larger amounts.

The basic information on healthy eating is similar to that which is found in other government sources; the difference is that the formulation of a nutrition pyramid makes this information more accessible and easier to understand.

Each different food group in the nutrition pyramid has its own color to make it easier to follow. Orange is grains, green is for vegetables, red stands for fruits, yellow is for fats, blue is for dairy foods and purple is for meat, fish and nuts. This gives you a simple but effective way to assess your daily requirements for each type of food.

Most of your daily intake of foods should be chosen from the lower groups of the nutrition pyramid such as wholegrain, fruit and vegetables. Then, as you move upwards, these foods should make up a smaller part of your diet. The nutritional regime is based on giving you an overall sensible eating plan and as such, you can still eat the occasional treat that would not be allowed on many diets.

The nutrition pyramid recommends that you eat a varied diet, while still keeping the focus on healthy foods, such as vegetables, whole grains and fruit. The fact that it also contains food groups such as nuts and beans, means that is equally suitable for meat eaters and vegetarians.

By following the nutrition pyramid, you can still eat the foods that so many people seem to enjoy, such as sweets, red meat, fats and sugar. The only difference is that you eat them in proper proportion to the rest of your diet. This is an easy way to achieve a good diet based on eating a variety of different foods, while still maintain the correct ration of fats, dairy, grains, meat etc.

The nutrition pyramid is much easier to follow than most of the fad diets that seem to be multiplying on the shelves of our bookstores and will give you a solid foundation for a healthy lifestyle.
